Keeping Your Space Calm and Cozy

When you come home from a busy day at work, does your space evoke serene, and calm feelings or does it evoke feelings of tension, and anxiousness? If your home is provoking negative feelings, this is a sign that you aren’t feeling connected to your living space. When we feel connected to the space we live in, it truly helps us empower our lives. In other words, our homes should be the place we can kick our feet up, relax, recharge and forget about the stress that is inevitable from the outside world.
Unfortunately, not everyone feels recharged, and relaxed when they’re in their home. A cluttered home is usually the cause of unconscious mental stress.
If you’re feeling like your space is lacking organization, and depleting you, below are some tips on how to keep your home calm, organized, peaceful, and serene.

When we are surrounded by clutter it can be very hard to focus. Being vigilant about the items that you bring into the home is important. In fact, the less you bring into your home, the less clutter you will have! A great rule of thumb when dealing with clutter is to deal with it before it gets out of hand. Donate items that are no longer useful on a frequent basis. In addition, if you’re bringing something into your home, try and get rid of something old.

Keep desk and counters clear
A calm space is a clear space. When you sit down at your desk, it’s easier to focus when the space is organized and clear. This means getting rid of papers on the desk and filing away the important ones.
In order to keep kitchen counters clear, you can tuck away small appliances in the cabinets, which leaves more space to do your cooking. I keep my toaster in a cabinet and pull it out when we use it.

Add dividers to drawers
I have a divider in most of my drawers, including my intimate’s drawer, (to organize my socks and underwear), my cutlery drawer and even my junk drawer! All of these dividers separate my belongings which makes it easy for me to locate my items instead of making a mess of the drawer digging around trying to find things.

Use calm, neutral paint palettes on walls
When we were looking for houses, I was immediately drawn into the one we bought because of the colours on the walls. The neutral hues, with creamy earthy tones, were very inviting, and calming. Needless to say, the colours on our walls can leave us feeling restful, where as busier colours on the wall, can feel less restful.

Make your bed each morning
I make a concerted effort to make my bed daily. If my bed is made the room automatically feels tidier. Furthermore, coming home at the end of the day and crawling into my fresh made bed, feels so good. It’s such a simple task to do each morning. Consequently, when I don’t do it, I notice the difference.

Have a few plants
Adding natural elements to your home such as plants has been proven to lower stress levels. Plants also help clean the air.

Keep things tidy
I try and keep things tidy as I go. For example, I will try and tidy up around me before I leave the house, and I do the same before I go to bed. The last thing I want to deal with when I come home is a mess, and the last thing I want to see when I wake up in the morning, is a sink full of dishes.

Add a cozy throw to your couch
There’s nothing like wrapping yourself up in a warm, cozy throw when you’re relaxing on the couch. Whether I’m reading a book, or watching my favorite show, I love the feeling of being covered in a soft, fluffy throw. This makes the couch my go-to when I want to unwind.

Keep photos in one area on a gallery wall
Last but not least, displaying family photos in the home is a great way to foster connection. It is important however to keep some walls bare if we want our living space to feel relaxing, non-cluttered and serene. In other words, displaying family photos in a gallery on one wall will keep an organized flow to your home, profoundly impacting you unconsciously in a positive way. I love seeing my families smiling faces of togetherness on our gallery wall.

In essence, keeping your home calm, organized and serene is an essential way to stay connected to your living space. I hope these tips help you bring more order and peace into your home, leaving you feeling refreshed and inspired.
