Picking out the perfect piece of artwork for your home, apartment, condo or office can be such a challenge, especially with enormous collections, styles and artists to choose from these days. We know how daunting purchasing large pieces of artwork can be. We wanted to share a few tips to help you feel more at ease when it comes to selecting art to match your space! Here are some important things to consider.
Positioning & Size
First, choose the wall space you’d like to decorate. If you are looking to create a statement, be sure to choose a place that is seen regularly by family and guests. Some examples of this are above the fireplace or over a large couch in the living room. As a general rule of thumb, a single standalone art piece should occupy two-thirds of the wall space.
Our best advice is to stay true to your personal style. If you enjoy colours but the room you’re decorating is covered in a blanket of neutrals, choose something bright and fun. Continue to accessorize based on the color of your art. If colour is not for you, stay in the neutral zone. There is nothing wrong with that. Trust us, we love our neutrals.
If you prefer simple textures, photography and print artwork in a simple frame is the way to go. For medium textures, we recommend print art featured in a more complex toned frame that will add a little “oomph” to the wall. A wooden, engraved, metal, or lustered frame should do the trick. But if you really love complex and heavy textures, you should go with a canvas print. The weave of canvas exudes a beautiful texture that will bring depth to your walls. If that still isn’t enough, purchase a floating frame to surround the piece!
Oversized art pieces are not for everybody. If you have trouble deciding on just one piece of artwork, one great alternative is to create a gallery wall of smaller art pieces. Gallery walls still fill a large wall space and provide flexibility to your meet your style. This way, you don’t have to choose just one! You can have a selection of your favourites.
Artwork is definitely a great way to add interest, texture, nostalgia, and in some cases drama, to any room. Although there are important things to consider when choosing the right piece for the right spot, the end result can be stunning.
