We are all about expressing our creativity, whether that be in fashion or interior decor and when minimalism became a trend, we hopped right on board.
When it comes to minimalism, large decor can be your best friend. Instead of having 15 small pieces around your room to decorate, include 3 larger statement pieces that show off your personality and add to the room.
Steps to Minimalizing your Space
Have monthly cleanouts, go through your drawers and get rid of clothes or accessories that don’t fit or that you don’t like anymore. Doing one dresser or one desk each month might be less overwhelming than taking on a whole room. Also clean out your bathroom while you’re at it! Get rid of those lotion bottles that you hate the scent of, and organize your hair accessories.
Choose neutrals. We recommend painting your room a neutral or pastel colour to match many different styles of decor. The same goes for furniture – greys and whites are always nice. This even goes for fashion. When shopping, look for the basics – black/white jeans, a few plain t-shirts and a denim jacket. That way you can mix and match any accessories with them!
Have a specific place for each item. A mistake that many people make is buying bins and throwing random things in; or having a junk drawer. If you need help organizing your bins, label them!
Buy items that can be used all year round. It might be fun to decorate for the different seasons, but having a simple and easy to maintain succulent on your side table, or picture frames that stay up all the time (swap out photos for seasonal pics/quotes and store them in the frame) can be very cute and minimalistic.
Major cleaning hauls 3 times a year. We like to take out all our clothes and sort through them during Christmas break, spring break and summer. Giving away or selling all your old clothes is a good way to make a little extra cash and you are helping yourself out in the meantime!
Ditch MOST of the prints. Adding too many prints to your room (like a printed bedspread) can end up making your room look busy. Instead try adding a few small textured pillows.
Last but not least, is Marley’s favourite tip inspired by Oprah. At the beginning of a new season, turn all your hangers around and when you wear an item, put the hanger in the correct way. At the end of the season (or 3 months), whichever hangers are still backwards, get rid of those clothing items because you didn’t wear them!
