5 Things to Keep in Mind When Furnishing Your Dream Home

Our talented and visionary La-Z-Boy of Vancouver designer, Debbie Heal, furnished homes for the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Millionaire Ocean View Home Lottery in White Rock and Morgan Creek with La-Z-Boy furniture.

The VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Millionaire Ocean View Home Lottery helps the doctors, nurses, and healthcare teams of VGH, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute deliver BC’s best care for adults. The lottery helps supplement support from the government, so the the Foundation can purchase the latest equipment, and fund advanced research for patient care. Working with the Lottery Homes is one of our favourite Community Initiatives. It not only gives us an opportunity to express our creativity for these beautiful homes, but is also a great chance for us to support a noble cause.

We sat with Debbie to get her thoughts on both the homes and what guided her when decorating. Here are 5 things Debbie suggests you keep in mind when furnishing your dream home.

What is your Decor theme?

Start with a theme. This will help guide your vision and help make your furnishing and colour pallette decisions much easier. When furnishing the White Rock Oceanview home, Debbie noted that along with its breathtaking ocean view, the house had a Mediterranean feel to it. She went with the theme and it meant the furniture and accents had to be light and airy. She also stuck with a Mediterranean colour palette, so using lots of cobalt blue and white throughout the upper level of the house.

What accessories can you use to add some pop?

The accessories, furnitures, and colours will make any room pop! Use this opportunity to express yourself, be unique, but also keeping true to the look & feel of the home and keeping true to the theme you’ve set. The the White Rock Oceanview home, Debbie’s favourite room was the dining room. She really loves the use of black and cobalt on the dining room upholstery, mixed with a rustic black and brown trestle table. She also really loves the juxtaposition of the antiqued table, with the delicate oval backs of the dining chairs. It’s something really unique that wouldn’t traditionally be paired together, but it really suits the overall look and feel of the home.

How can you use all the space to be fun, unique, and practical?

Be creative with your space! Don’t be afraid to be a little unconventional if it’ll be practical but also really fun. The White Rock Oceanview Home has one of the largest master bedrooms Debbie has ever seen. So what did she do with all the space? It is so large that she were able to add a La-Z-Boy Collins sectional, making a cozy area to cuddle with the kids, read, or enjoy a glass a of wine with your feet up. Imagine having a comfortable sofa and being able to kick back and relax with your family, without messing up your bed! Just the sight of it will bring a smile to your face. It’s the perfect blend of both comfort and style in your living space.

How can you enjoy the benefits of the home everyday?

Some homes are build with unique features to allow you to appreciate many aspects of the home. The Morgan Creek House looks out over a manmade lake that has white swans in it. To appreciate the lake, the best feature of this home is the amazing Great room with stunning floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the lake.

Another great feature of this home is the private deck from the Master Bedroom! Can you imagine walking out of your bedroom first thing in the morning to this beautiful view? You can sip your morning coffee, catch up on some emails, read the news, or just reflect and get ready for your day. With an amazing setup like this to enjoy the beautiful view, make sure you’ve got the right furniture to take in the view and appreciate it every single day.

What are the latest interior decor trends?

This one may be the most obvious – but make sure you know what the latest trends are. This is the second time Debbie has furnished the Morgan Creek house. The first time, she used a monochromatic colour scheme but this time, since colour is king for 2016, she added a little little colour this time around. You'll notice there are now splashes of celery green throughout the main floor and fuchsia pink downstairs. The fuchsia enhances the fun vibe of the Games Room, which has a pool table, home theatre area, bar, and kids play area.
